Obituary for Sara Anne Brown (Tompkins)

Sara Anne Brown, of Charlottesville, VA, passed away April 26, 2016. She was 83 years old.

Sara was born in Crozet, VA on August 23, 1932, the daughter of Charles W Tompkins and Kathleen Rogers Tompkins. When she was a young child, the family moved to Nokesville, Virginia, where she graduated from Brentsville District High School in 1949. She maintained a 98.6 scholastic average throughout high school, and she was mentioned in Who’s Who in American High Schools for that achievement.

She married William E Brown in 1949, and took a job at the Pentagon where her duties included fingerprinting prospective DOD employees. She eventually quit her job to be a full time mother and raise a family. She had 8 children: William (Steve), Timothy, Joyce, Kathy, Carol, Jeff, Rick, and Mike. She was preceded in death by her husband Bill, two of her sons (Steve and Timmy), and her granddaughter Dorian Brown.

Sara became an antiques dealer in the 1970’s as the owner and operator of Olde House Antiques, first in Manassas, then Brandy Station, and finally in Nokesville. She was a past president of the Nokesville United Methodist Women, and an active member of the Extension Homemaker’s club. Her recent interests included gardening, photography, books, crossword puzzles, and Antiques Roadshow.

She is survived by her brother Clarence Tompkins and his wife Joyce of Nokesville, Virginia; her children Joyce Brown and her husband Chris Pax of Charlottesville, VA, Kathy Brown of Gordonsville, VA, Carol Brown of Charlottesville VA, Jeff Brown and his wife Melanie of Manassas, VA, Rick Brown of Charlottesville, VA, and Mike Brown and his wife Joanie of Nokesville VA. Sara was a proud grandmother to Miranda Pax, Mario Brown, Becky Brown, Christine Brown, Erika Brown Killmon, Michelle Brown, William Brown, Timothy Votaw, and Samatha Brown. She was especially happy to live to see her great grandchild Natalie Killmon. She had two nephews: William (Gibby) Tompkins and his wife Michele, and Gregory Tompkins; and nieces and nephews on the Brown side of the family are many and too numerous to mention.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday April 30th at 1:30 PM at the Nokesville United Methodist Church located at 12550 Aden Road in Nokesville VA, with a fellowship meal and visitation immediately following the service. Interment will be private at the Valley View Cemetery in Nokesville VA. Well wishers may send flowers, or in lieu of flowers donations are accepted for the Nokesville UMC UMW Memorial Fund.
