Long time resident of Springfield, Va., Henry Walter Kowalski passed away Friday, April 21, 2017, at home with family.

Henry “Hank” Kowalski was born May 7, 1930 in Cleveland, Ohio to Anthony and Theodora Kowalski. He graduated from Holy Name High School (Cleveland) in 1948. On July 7, 1951, he married the former Josephine Marie Dorko of Cleveland. Hank spent 23 years in the Marine Corps and was a combat veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars. Upon retiring from the Marine Corps at the rank of Master Sergeant, Hank worked for the Prince Georges County School System’s Plans and Operations Office for 20 years. After his second retirement, Hank studied and was ordained a Deacon in the Orthodox Catholic Church. As an active member of the Knights of Columbus, he served as Grand Knight, Faithful Navigator, and District Deputy in addition to other offices.

Hank is survived by his three sons and five daughters; JoEllen and husband Robert, Greg and his wife Julie, Stephanie and her husband Brad, Michael and his wife Karin, Richard and his wife Mary, Christine and her husband Karl, Constance, and Catherine and her husband Eric. In addition, Hank is survived by thirteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Service will be held on July 11, 2017 at 9:30 am in the Epiphany of Our Lord Byzantine Catholic Church 3410 Woodburn Rd. Annadale, VA. The Rev. John Basarab will be officiating.

Hank will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery alongside his wife of forty years, Josephine who preceded him in death on January 2, 1992.
