Obituary for Carole Joyce Jones

Carole Joyce Jones
Carole Poling Jones, age 73, of Cocoa Beach, FL, formerly of Falls Church and Manassas, VA, passed away suddenly on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Savannah, GA. Carole was born August 11, 1944 in Washington, DC to the late Herbert C. and LaVonne (von Gemmingen) Kriesel.

As a child, she lived with her family in Alexandria, VA, College Park, MD, and Bristow, VA. While living in Bristow, she attended Brentsville Elementary School and graduated from Osbourn High School in 1962. In 1967, she graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park and took a job with Service Employees International Union in Washington, DC.

Carole retired from SEIU in 1996 and began volunteering nearly full-time for multiple organizations including the National Geographic Society and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. Carole was actively involved in her local Democratic party and served for many years as a precinct captain while a resident of Falls Church, VA. Carole cared deeply about her neighbors—staying in touch with them even after relocating to Cocoa Beach, FL. She served on her Neighborhood Watch committee for many years. After retirement, Carole also became an executive consultant to labor leader John Sweeney, then-president of the AFL-CIO.

Carole loved to travel. In her lifetime, she lived in Nigeria, and traveled to east Africa to visit her parents, with tours across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. She also travelled to China after 9/11, in order to visit before the construction of the Three Gorges Dam. She traveled extensively through Europe and visited with dear friends in Australia and New Zeland many times. Later in life, she enjoyed travel to central America, especially Costa Rica and Panama.

Carole was an avid Washington Redskins fan, having spent her years growing up on the farm in Bristow watching the Redskins on television with her father. Carole was an accomplished photographer and could be counted on to document all of her family’s important events. She was an excellent golfer, and enjoyed skiing trips with friends at locations across the Rocky Mountains. Carole also loved the beach. From swimming to relaxing with a cold drink in a beach chair with friends, to surf fishing off the sandbar at Oregon Inlet, or playing in the sand with her nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews—Carole loved the beach and the ocean. Carole loved the music of the 1960’s and she loved to dance. Carole was an excellent cook and hostess; visitors to her home always agreed that there was nothing so nice as being a guest at her place.

Carole was preceded in death by her first husband Robert D. Poling of Falls Church, VA, her second husband, Vernon Alan Jones of Cocoa Beach, FL, and one nephew, William Peter Stoll. Carole is survived by her siblings Jean Harrover of Manassas, VA, Gretchen Stoll of Victorville, CA and Warren Kriesel of Athens, GA. Carole leaves behind 10 nieces and nephews, and nine great nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss her dearly.

The family will receive friends at 10 AM, Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Baker Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 10001 Nokesville Road, Manassas, VA. Her funeral will follow immediately after at 11 AM, with Pastor Jeff Wilson officiating. Interment will follow on Monday, January 15, with a private service in Falls Church, VA. A separate memorial service will take place at 10 AM on Friday, January 19, at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, 525 Minuteman Causeway, Cocoa Beach, FL., with Pastor Jeff Bergstresser presiding.
