Obituary for Barbara J. Groves

Barbara J. “Bobbie” Groves, daughter of the late William Randolph and Helen O. Pumphrey, was born at home on August 24th, 1951 in Fairfax, Virginia. She attended schools in Virginia, graduating in 1969 from Wilson High School in Fairfax, Virginia. On April 11th, 1970 she married Richard W. Groves. In January of 1971, they welcome their first child, a boy named Richard A. Groves and in December 1974, they welcomed a daughter named Tammy L. Groves.

Bobbie worked at various companies throughout her career as a bookkeeper, payroll specialist, and as an accounts payable administrator. She was a family woman, who enjoyed reading, spending time with family and friends, and fishing with her husband. She was loved by all that met her and was known for having an infectious smile.

She is preceded in death by two brothers, William “Billy” Pumphrey and Allen Pumphrey, and one sister, Deborah “Debbie” Pumphrey.

Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her family: her beloved husband of 47 years, Richard “Butch” Groves, her two children, Richard “Richie” Groves of Manassas, VA and Tammy L. Groves (Nicholas Zimbro) of Manassas, VA; her six precious grandchildren; her brother, James Pumphrey (Mary Pumphrey) of Strasburg, VA; sisters, Margaret Gray of Winchester, VA and Anita Chaney (Ray Chaney) of Ruther Glen, VA; a host of nieces and nephews.

Barbara J. Groves departed this life on April 22nd, 2017 at the age of 65. Per Bobbie’s wishes, a Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Corning’s Fight Against Cancer Team of the American Cancer Society to honor her life.
