Joseph Anthony Verciglio, 72, of Manassas, passed away February 1, 2013 at the Virginia Hospital Center, surrounded by his loving family. Joe was diagnosed in 2008 with Pulmonary Fibrosis and lived the last 4 years to the fullest until complications arose and he lost his battle to the disease.
Born in Niagara Falls, NY on October 9, 1940, he was the son of the late Guissepe and Rose Pezzimenti Verciglio.
Joe left Niagara Falls and went to Paul Smith’s Junior college in 1958, then onto West Virginia University in 1960 where he played baseball and received his Masters Degree in Education. After graduation, on June 13, 1964 in Niagara Falls, NY, he married the love of his life, the former Charlotte Ann Pane, who survives. Joe and Charlotte moved to Fairfax, Virginia where he became a teacher at James Madison High School in 1964 where he taught Biology and coached Baseball and Wrestling. He left James Madison to move to Chantilly High School in 1973 where he continued to teach and coach until his retirement in October of 1995.
Joe was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1997; the James Madison Hall of Fame in 2003; and the Niagara Falls Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.
Joe was a loving husband, and father, and loved his grandchildren more than life itself. He loved his Italian heritage, Niagara Falls, his many friends, and all sports. He also enjoyed coaching, fishing, and hunting; and he especially enjoyed time on the beach, the ocean and his home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
Surviving besides his beloved wife of 48 years, Charlotte Ann Verciglio of Manassas, are two daughters, Maria Woods and her husband Jeff of Radford, VA; Christine DiModica and her husband Jim of Manassas VA; 6 grandchildren, James, Jordan, Elizabeth and Jonathan Woods; and Alexis and Nicholas DiModica; one brother, Paul Verciglio and his wife Trudy of Grand Island, NY; one sister, Connie Verciglio Colavecchia and her late husband Peter Colavecchia of Lewiston, NY; extended family, niece, Paulette Colavecchia Queler; nephews, Paul Verciglio, Jr. and Joseph Verciglio; great nephews, Peter Woolverton, Jeffrey Woolverton, Joseph F. Verciglio Jr.; great-great nieces and nephews, Peter Lukas Woolverton, Ella Woolverton, Demi Woolverton; a special sister-in-law Gail Dartez and her husband Reginald Dartez of Baytown, Texas; and many cousins and close friends.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 5, 2013, from 5-8 p.m. at the Baker-Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 10001 Nokesville Road, Manassas. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church, 9300 Stonewall Road, Manassas, with the Rev. Robert Cilinski as the Celebrant.
Interment will be private and take place at a later date.
