Obituary:
Vernon Darrell Acree, Jr., known to his friends and family as “Mike” and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as “Pop Pop”, passed away on February 1, 2013 in Fairfax, VA.

Mr. Acree was born June 25, 1919 in Washington, DC, the eldest son of the late Vernon Darrell Acree and Elizabeth Penny Acree. Mr. Acree graduated from Eastern High School, where he served in the Cadet Corps, in 1937. On April 3, 1938 in Washington, DC, Mr. Acree married the former Doris E. Wight, his high school classmate.

Mr. Acree is a World War II veteran and served in the United States Army Criminal Investigation Division in Europe. After the war, Mr. Acree re-entered the U.S. Government, where he had begun his career in 1937 at the age of 17 as a messenger in the U.S. Treasury Department. Mr. Acree retired from the federal government in April, 1977 after 40 years of distinguished service spanning seven presidential administrations. Among his many positions in the federal government, Mr. Acree served as a Deputy US Marshal (the youngest at that time to hold that position), Assistant Commissioner for the Internal Revenue Service (Inspection) and Commissioner of the US Customs Service.

Mr. Acree is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Arthur S. Fleming Award, awarded to the most outstanding young men and women in U.S. Government service (1956); the Rockefeller Public Service Award, the highest award granted by the private sector to a U.S. Government career employee (1972); and the Alexander Hamilton Award, the U.S. Treasury Department's highest honor (1977).

After leaving the government, Mr. Acree owned and operated a consulting business, as well as a restaurant, “The Lamplighter”, in Fairfax, VA.

Besides his parents, Mike was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers. Survivors include his loving wife of almost 75 years, Doris Acree of Gainesville, VA; four children, V. Darrell Acree and his wife Carol of Washington, DC; Allan L. Acree and his wife Carol of Potomac, MD; Jean Winters of Gainesville; and M. Elizabeth Ives and her husband Leon of Raleigh, NC; one sister, Marie Olson and her husband David of Idaho Falls, ID; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Friday, February 8, 2013, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Baker-Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 10001 Nokesville Road, Manassas. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, February 9, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 8713 Linton Hall Road, Gainesville, VA with Rev. Thomas Yehl as the Celebrant.

Private Interment will take place on Monday, February 11, 2013 at Stonewall Memory Gardens, Manassas, VA.
