A Friend to Remember

Chuck Thompson was my friend for 35 years. I first met Chuck around 1986 at a local gym. We both worked in the DC area and arrived at the gym about the same time. After a few instances of small talk during our exercise routine, we realized that both of us were in Vietnam about the same time. We decided to work out together, and shortly afterward, we bumped into Doug Moore, a decorated, Airborne chopper pilot who was in Vietnam too. Doug joined us and what a crew we were, swapping war stories, pushing heavy weights, and laughing at every tall story and joke. As the years passed our friendship grew, and in 1997 I married my sweetheart, Donna, and Chuck was my best man. Chuck was a tough Navy diver that never backed down from a challenge - even helped me move my furniture at least three times. Somewhere along the way, it must have been in the late 1980's or early 1990's, Chuck accepted Jesus Christ as his savior, and what a change it made. To most folks he was still a tough sailor, but I could see a change in his perspective on life. He joined the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Manassas, VA and became a faithful servant. Shortly afterwards he met a wonderful lady named Debra at the church, and they were soon married. During our workouts over the years, we had many discussions about the Bible and its content, and I enjoyed every one. I know where Chuck is now, because Saint Paul told us in 2nd Corinthians, 5:8 - "We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord ''. Doug and I aren't so young anymore, our old bones seem to creak with every lift, but we'll still keep up the gym routine for as long as we can. We already miss Chuck, but someday we'll meet up with him again. We won't get lost because we already have his coordinates and a personal relationship with the keeper of the door. In John 10:9 Jesus said "I am the door, if anyone enters by me will be saved" James (Jim) Price
