Obituary for Alice Burnham Richards (Burnham)
Alice Burnham Richards, age 87, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2019.
Born and raised in New Jersey, Alice grew up loving the ocean, playing basketball, and roller skating. She loved to dance and met her future husband, Edwin S. Richards, Jr, at a dance in 1953. They were together until his death in 1988. Alice worked for Bell Telephone Company, and then in the restaurant she ran with her husband. Alice became the Regional Director for Restaurant Operations for F.W. Woolworth Co. and traveled all over the east coast before the age of cell phones or GPS. She traveled for fun in her later years, visiting almost every National Park in the continental U.S. as well as vacationing in Europe and taking numerous cruises. Alice was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years and a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church in Riverton, NJ.
Alice Richards was a strong-willed, loving, and inspiring woman. Thrust into an industry (restaurants and food service) that was not her natural milieu, she achieved amazing success. She never lost her fighting spirit or her zest for life, even when faced with numerous setbacks and tragedies. She instilled in her daughter the drive to do her best and a deep sense of the ridiculous. Alice never lost the chance to laugh at herself and at life.
Alice lost her son, Edwin S. Richards, III in 1976 and her husband in 1988. Alice is survived by her daughter, Anne Richards, her brother, Richard Burnham and his wife Beverly, her brother-in-law Raymond Richards and his wife Mary Lou, and her sister-in-law Carol Culberson whose husband John is deceased. Alice will also be missed by many beloved nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will be held at 6 pm on March 22, 2019 at Place One Condo, 5500 Holmes Run Pkwy, Alexandria, VA.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. May 4, 2019 at Calvary Presbyterian Church, Riverton, NJ and internment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Cemetery in Cinnaminson, NJ.
