Obituary for Alvin Lee Maxfield

Alvin Lee Maxfield
Alvin Lee Maxfield, 85, of Manassas, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2019 at his home after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s.

Born December 15, 1933 in Oxon Hill, MD, he was the son of the late Alvie and Hilda Barnes Maxfield. On July 28, 1955, he married the former Joyce L. Foster, who survives.

Known to his family as “GG” and to his many friends as Al, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from George Mason University. He also proudly served his country in the United States Army and Air Force Reserves; and later worked as a security specialist for the Central Intelligence Agency prior to his retirement. After his retirement from the federal government, he worked as a private contractor and owned his own company for a short period of time. He was also a long-time member of St. Thomas United Methodist Church in Manassas.

Al lived life to its fullest, savoring every moment. With a smile that could light up a room and a contagious laugh, he was loved and respected by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Growing up, he spent every summer on his grandparent’s farm developing his lifelong love for nature. An avid hunter, fisherman and gardener he was in his element spending time on his valley property in Mount Jackson. With a pool in the backyard and a kinship to the ocean, Al was a natural in and around the water as well. He proudly taught every one of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to swim. Until the very end, he kept his country boy spirit enjoying country music at home in Manassas, where he has lived for the past 51 years.

Besides his parents, Al was preceded in death by one daughter, Pamela Maxfield; one son, David Maxfield; and one brother, Douglas Maxfield. Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Joyce Maxfield of Manassas; two daughters, Renee Miller and her husband Greg of Falls Church; Michele Kopcsak and her husband George of Browntown; one brother, Ellis Maxfield of Manassas; three grandchildren, Jennifer Kakar of Manassas; Mark Cosgrove of Charlottesville; Meghan Jackson and her husband Kevin of Front Royal; and nine great-grandchildren, Alexis, Emily, Dylan, Jackson, Caden, Ethan, Noah, Zachary, and Luke.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 24, 2019 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Baker-Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 10001 Nokesville Road Manassas. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, February 25, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Minister Leslie Oakes officiating.

Interment will immediately follow in Stonewall Memory Gardens, 12004 Lee Highway, Manassas.
