Obituary for Annette Thelma Smith

Annette Smith was born on March 20, 1944 in Nassau, Bahamas, daughter of Thelma Mae and raised by Mae and Robert Eller.

In her early years, Annette lived in the Bahamas and worked as a beautician before moving to the States. Married for 53 years to Al, lovingly nicknamed Smitty, Annette and Smitty began their journey together at Charleston Air Force Station in Maine. In Maine, the oldest daughter Faith was born before the family was transferred to Iowa. In Iowa, Smitty, Annette and Faith welcomed middle daughter Melissa before moving to Montana. In Montana, Smitty, Annette, Faith and Melissa, welcomed the youngest son, Jeff to the family. From there, the family lived on various Air Force Bases in New Jersey, Texas, and California before settling permanently in Virginia. Annette was the anchor of the family, as a military wife, Girl Scout Troop leader, Cub Scout Leader, Sunday school teacher and room mother for each of her children. Annette was a devoted Air Force wife and mother.

In Texas, Annette started her career as a nursing assistant then the Air Force came calling with a move to California. While in California, Annette became a certified nursing assistant. With the move to Virginia, Annette’s nursing career thrived as she worked over the years in nursing homes, specialty care centers and Hospice home care.

Upon retiring from nursing, Annette’s family life grew as she became a doting and loving grandmother. Annette had a wide variety of interests including home decorating, playing slot machines and relishing in frequent family gatherings. Her days caring for her granddaughter, Jessica, from early childhood through high school, were cherished moments.

Annette passed peacefully on October 27, 2018 surrounded by loved ones. Annette inspired all by her continued strength, courage and love of life.

Annette is survived by her husband of 53 years, Smitty, her three children, Faith, Melissa, and Jeff as well as her grandchildren, Jessica, Angela, Caroline, James and Michael.

The family will receive visitors on Friday, November 2, 2018 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at Baker-Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 10001 Nokesville Road, Manassas, Virginia. A funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.

Interment will be on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. in Quantico National Cemetery.
