Obituary for Becky Dowell (Holland)

Sue Rebecca Holland Dowell, “Becky” passed away peacefully on May 24th 2022 at her home, surrounded by loved ones. She was 93. Becky was generous and kind, and was always admired for her radiant smile, charming sense of humor, and calming disposition.
Becky was born in Moneta, Virginia on April 4, 1929, to the late Peter Davis and Thelma Pauline (Woodford) Holland. Growing up in the south during the Great Depression taught her to find happiness in all things, and ingrained in her lifelong traits, including frugality and showing compassion for others. She consistently rooted for the underdog.
Becky is preceded in death by her husband, Walter Frederick Dowell, Jr., daughter Mary Beth, and brother P.D.
Becky graduated from Moneta High School and Madison College (JMU) before coming to Manassas to teach in the Manassas City Schools. There she met her husband of 53 years, and together they provided an idyllic home for their four children. As a wife, mother, homemaker, and “Gramma”, she was devoted to her family and community. Becky was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Manassas Garden Club, Manassas Firemen Women’s Auxiliary, Manassas Junior Woman’s Club, and the Antique Automobile Club. Her interests included playing Baptist Hymns on the piano and organ, gardening and floral design, and spending time with family and friends.
Becky is survived by her children Walter Frederick Dowell, III (Terri), Leigh Anne Dowell Rhoads (David), and Susan Ewing (Charles), grandchildren Melissa Bankert, Becky Kent, Holland Rhoads and Cecelia Rhoads; and great-grandchildren Andrew and Jacob Kent, and Eleanor and Virginia Rhoads.
Her family wishes to acknowledge the compassionate care provided by Dr. Tad Latimer and Mrs. Zarghoona Noory.
Details on Becky’s celebration of life will be provided at a later date.
