Obituary for Charles Richard Conner

Charles Richard Conner
Charles R. (Chuck) Conner passed away on March 11, 2021. He was born in Nelsonville, Ohio on January 23, 1940, to his parents, Charles Foster Conner and Adrien Conner, both deceased. He is also preceded in death by his brother Max, and his sister, Patricia Beech.

He is survived by his brother, Terry Conner (Susie), and his children, Tina Conner Melillo (Clark), Pamela Zecka, both from Virginia, Eric Conner of Athens, Ohio, and his stepdaughter, Teresa Newton. Grandchildren and great grandchildren include Heather Layne, her children, Madison, Elysia & Ciara, Tyler Melillo (Colleen) and their daughter, Aubrey, Hillary Zecka and Anthony Zecka.

His extended family includes his nieces and nephews, Barbara Beech Brown (Dave), Melissa Beech Kuhn (Rob), Amy Beech Zielinski (Scott), and Mike Beech (Pat), all of Ohio, and Brian Conner (Lisa) from South Carolina.

He is also survived by his long-term companion, Linda Bond.

Chuck, or Dick as he was called then, attended Buchtel High School and was a talented athlete, playing basketball throughout his time there. Following high school, he enlisted in the US Army, where he served in the Army Security Agency in Africa and other locations. Fascinated by the wildlife there, he had the opportunity years later to return to Africa on a photographic safari.

He was retired from AEP for many years, where he was known and appreciated by his many fellow employees wherever he worked. Always a hard worker, he was also known as a skilled and trusted asset on crews, where he was often called upon in hostile weather and hard conditions to help restore electrical service during emergencies in the communities he supported. He also possessed more than his fair share of common sense, and never believed another person’s position necessarily prevented them from benefitting from his advice and counsel.

He loved good times, good friends and family, plus good food and a good joke or prank. Chuck was a youthful spirit throughout his life and was valued by his friends for both his sense of humor and his willingness to lend a hand to others who were less fortunate. He always loved good music and good musicians and was not afraid to join in on a song or two. He was also an avid motorcyclist and rode until late in his life.

Chuck lived in Virginia for the past 18 years, where he was living when he passed away. He received dedicated, around the clock care from his children until the very end. He passed at home, which was his fondest hope.

A loving father and a loyal friend, he will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He was one of a kind and the world will be a little less interesting without him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions take the form of a donation to Capital Caring Hospice, 24419 Millstream Drive, Aldie, VA 20105, or to those in need through your local food pantry.
