Obituary for Charles Leslie Meyers, Jr.

Charles Leslie Meyers, Jr.
CDR Charles L. Meyers, Jr., USN (Ret.) died in Alexandria, VA on 26 October 2019 from complications of metastatic prostate cancer. He was surrounded by family at his passing.

Charlie, or “Doctor Bogard” as he was known far and wide, was a national treasure—witty, a superb athlete, and a beloved husband, father, son, brother, teammate and friend, who left everyone he met better for having known him.

Charlie was born on 15 December 1957 and was graduated from Pemberton Township High School in Pemberton, NJ. He received a Congressional appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, where he majored in political science, graduating with the historic USNA ’80 First [coed] Class with the highest accolades for his charismatic leadership, gregarious demeanor, while competing valiantly for prestigious ‘Anchor Man’ academic recognition honors. Charlie was recognized by his company mates as the spiritual leader of the “33rd Herd.” Charlie was considered by all 33rd Herd mates as their best friend. Every interaction with Charlie left the person better off morally, mentally, and physically.

Dr. Bogard was a three-year letterman on the Navy football team, demonstrating his versatility by seamlessly making the unusual switch from middle “nose” guard to cornerback. Bogard’s superb defensive talents were highlighted as the ABC -TV Player of the Game in a tight victory over the University of Illinois in 1979, and in the inaugural 1978 Holiday Bowl in San Diego. Following the completion of football 1/c year, Charlie walked on to the baseball team, but when told by the coach that he wouldn’t start ahead of his multi-year players, Charlie simply lettered in track instead.

A rewarding and successful naval career in surface warfare included shipboard combat assignments aboard the USS Whipple (FF-1062), USS Wabash (AOR-5), USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63), as Executive Officer of USS Roanoke (AOR-7), and as a company officer at the U.S. Naval Academy. Charlie had an extended record of service to the nation in and out of uniform.

After service in uniform, Charlie worked in a variety of defense and homeland security positions in the Washington D.C. area, lending his leadership and national security expertise to key programs and initiatives. After his naval career Charlie continued his lifetime of service by coaching Bishop Ireton’s High School football team. He thrived on working with the team to develop leaders while building character. His inspiration helped bring the team to the state championship on multiple occasions.

Charlie’s crowning achievement was his children, Alexander and Marissa. In conversations with classmates and friends Charlie bragged about his love for his children, their caring ways, good nature, and inner strength. Charlie’s love and pride in his children ran deep and never wavered.

Charlie was predeceased by his mother Castalia. He is survived by his father Charles Leslie Meyers, wife Karen, children Alexander (wife Kaight) and Marissa, and their mother, Patti. In addition, Charlie is survived by older brother Al (wife Margarita), brother and USNA football teammate Eddie, USNA ’82 (wife Janet), sister Carmen, and sister CAPT Carla Meyers USNA ’90, as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

The family will receive friends on Friday, November 1, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at the Baker-Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 10001 Nokesville Road, Manassas. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 9325 West Street, Manassas, VA 20110 with The Very Rev. Stuart Schadt officiating.

A memorial service at the U.S. Naval Academy to honor Charlie’s life and legacy of service while wearing the cloth of our nation will take place at a later date.
