Obituary for Claire Helen Murphy (Tobin)

Claire Tobin Murphy died peacefully surrounded by family On July 13, 2022, at Reston Hospital Center in Reston, Virginia at the age of 82.

Claire was preceded in death by her loving husband Charles Michael Murphy; Her father James Tobin; Her mother Claire Anders and stepfather Lavern W. Anders; And her loving grandson Christopher M.L. Murphy.

She is survived by her sister Kathleen Anders; Her loving sons Paul Murphy (Jamie); John Murphy (Karen); Christopher Murphy (Lori); Grandchildren Jacquelyne Gaesler (Will); Amanda Martin (Tommy); Thomas Murphy; Patrick Murphy; Chantz Murphy; Sydney Murphy. Great Grandchildren Haylea Tomberlin; Skye Tomberlin; Makinnley Tomberlin; Alaina Martin; Kassidy Martin.

Claire was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts to James and Claire Tobin on 5/28/1940. She graduated from Arlington High school in Arlington Massachusetts in 1957. She married Charles Murphy her high school sweetheart on June 12th, 1960.

When Charlie took a position with the United States State Department in 1961 this began many overseas tours in which Claire accompanied him to multiple countries including India, Nicaragua, Libya, Cyprus, Ghana, Peru, and Spain. Claire loved to entertain and often held socials to meet and welcome the other families on tour with them. As they traveled around the world the family grew to three boys. In 1979 Charlie, Claire and the boys moved back stateside and settled in Manassas, Virginia. Claire would become a Data Analyst for the Central Intelligence Agency until her retirement. Soon after retirement Claire decided to take a position as a greeter at Haydon Elementary School in Manassas Virginia. She enjoyed her time there and especially loved the interaction with the staff and children welcoming them every morning.

Claire was an active and dedicated member of All Saints Catholic Church in Manassas having attended since 1979 and was in the Rosary Alter Society. Over the years Claire and Charlie befriended many fellow parishioners and the “Crew” was formed. The crew attended family gatherings, traveled various places, and could be found at local restaurants after mass where a table was always reserved and waiting for them.

Claire was a diehard Boston fan having grown up in Massachusetts attending games and loved her home sports teams and still rooted for them here in Virginia. She would often talk to family about the big win. Claire loved to collect lladro and Beenie Babies and had amassed a great collection over the years. Claire also loved to clothes shop and loved colorful hats and purses often gifting them to various family members to match with outfits and to wear on special occasions. Claire had a love for animals and her favorite little buddy Diesel would often come to see her at her apartment and comfort her when she needed a lick.

Visitation will be on Monday August 1st at Baker-Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center 10001 Nokesville Rd. Manassas Virginia from 5pm – 6:30pm and Rosary recital from 6:30pm to 7pm. A funeral Mass is scheduled for Tuesday August 2nd at All Saints Catholic Church 9300 Stonewall Rd Manassas Virginia at 10:30am. Interment will be at Quantico National Cemetery 18424 Joplin Rd Triangle Virginia at 12:30pm. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and hospital staff at both Fauquier Hospital and Reston Hospital Center for all their hard work and dedication. In lieu of flowers the family requests that any donations be made to the American Cancer Society or your local animal shelter.
