Obituary for Dr. Victor Brian Coates

Dr. Victor Brian Coates
Dr. Victor Brian Coates, a beloved Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, coach, father, brother, family member, and friend passed away in Manassas, Virginia on Friday, December 4, 2020.

Victor was born on January 17, 1959 in Washington, DC Columbia Hospital for Women. He attended an all-boys Catholic School in Northern Virginia. Victor (Brian as he was called as a young boy) played pee wee football and was the pitcher on his little league baseball team.

His family moved to Manassas and he transferred to Marsteller Middle School, and graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School, class of 1977, creating some of his favorite memories, especially as a top awarded academic athlete and football player. He would say he could write 20 movies about his high school years alone.

During Senior year of high school, he worked at Shakey's Pizza after school and saved to buy the car he would talk about for the rest of his life, his maroon 1970 Barracuda, with fat jacked up back tires and a shaker hood.

Victor received a nearly perfect SAT score and graduated in 1981 Pre-Med from Millersville University, Pennsylvania, as the captain of the Marauder football team. He was named Alumni of the Year later in the 1980s.

At Millersville University, he met Terry Schmalhofer. They married and had their son and first of four children, Christopher. Victor graduated Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine, Philadelphia, Pa., as a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine in 1985, then moved to Palos Verdes, Ca. after being accepted into a competitive surgical medical residency at Hawthorne Hospital. The residency included monthly medical missions to free clinics to Mexico to treat patients with severe foot deformities. Upon completion, his family welcomed their daughter and second child, Allison, born in Lancaster, Pa..

In 1987, they moved back to Victor’s hometown in Manassas, Va. and soon opened a private medical practice. Victor finished his surgical board certification with American Board of Podiatric Medicine and joined the staff of the local hospitals, skilled nursing homes, and Northern Virginia surgical centers. Two more daughters were born and joined the family -- first Kathryn and then Laura.

Victor practiced more than 30 years as a Podiatrist and surgeon in his hometown of Manassas and surrounding area. His specialties included sports medicine, corrective surgery, and visiting the skilled nursing care facilities to treat patients and share stories with them.

His passion for football never waned. He continued to coach his daughters and son’s little league teams. Eventually he coached defense for Osbourn High School, helping them to win their first-ever, undefeated AAA Division state title in 2006.

He loved motorcycles, and even built a few of his own, including a custom with a double gas tank, he called, "Boss Hogg."

Victor loved music, especially Rock and Roll and Funk, and was often blasting his favorite tunes while playing and singing along on his own guitar. His children’s memories are filled with scenes of their father shredding on an electric guitar in the living room as if he was playing for an audience of thousands. Self taught, he wrote and recorded his own music, and could play almost anything after hearing for the first time. Needless to say, he was one of the coolest men that ever walked.

Victor is survived by his children, Christopher, Allison, Kathryn, and Laura; his grandsons, Colby and Jaxon; and his brother, Kevin Coates; sister-in-law, Julie Coates; nephew, Daniel McDonald; and his children's mother, Terry. He is preceded in death by his parents Anne and Bernard "Buzz" Coates.

A private celebration of his life was held on Sunday, December 13, 2020 in Manassas at the Great Hall, Farm Brew Live, Manassas.

The family has set up an academic athletic scholarship fund: "The Dr. Victor Coates Memorial Fund," with the Osbourn Athletic Boosters Club scholarship fund. To contribute, visit: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=U7ZWD3ZMGV9JJ&Z3JncnB0=
