Condolence: To the Zeizel family,
Gene and I went to high school together in Delray Beach. I moved to Reno a few years later and found out that Gene was at the Univ of Nevada where I was. We were able to get together frequently and Gene was a great friend of mine. We lost touch as I believe he moved to Chicago.
Today, I thought I would try to find him on the internet and when I searched, I find that he passed earlier this year. This made me very sad as he was a very good person. I want to express my deepest sympathy and wish everyone the best.

Condolence: Dear Zeizel family,

I offers my prayers and heartfelt condolence to you. I am sadden to learn of the passing of my colleague, Dr. Gene Zeizel. Gene was a long time member of the FEMA National Dam Safety Program staff. He led the dam safety training and research activities in FEMA for many years before he retired. Gene managed the development of many notable and important National Dam Safety Program publications such as, Emergency Action Planning for State Regulated High Hazard Potential Dams: Findings and Recommendations (FEMA 608), Technical Manual for Dam Owners: Impacts of Plants on Earthen Dams (FEMA 534), Technical Manual for Dam Owners: Impacts of Animals on Earthen Dams (FEMA 473), and Technical Manual: Conduits through Embankment Dams (FEMA 484), to name a few. He also served on the Heinz Center Panel on Economic, Environmental and Social Outcomes of Dam Removal. Gene was a founding member of the Dam Safety Training Work Group and was a key member of the work group throughout his career in the National Dam Safety Program. This work group develops and delivers a highly regarded technical seminar at the Emergency Management Institute. 2019 saw the 27th year of this annual seminar that trains engineers and emergency managers on various aspects of dam safety. Gene was actually a major reason why I wanted to join the National Dam Safety Program. Back in 2000, when I was working at U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, I was asked to participate in a dam safety geotechnical research needs workshop in Denver, CO. Gene was the organizer of that event. That was my first introduction to the National Dam Safety Program. I was so awestruck by all of the nationally and internationally recognized leaders in dam safety and civil engineering participating in the workshop that I told myself, if I ever got the opportunity, I would love to be part of the FEMA and the National Dam Safety Program.

Dr. Zeizel, thank you for introducing me to the National Dam Safety Program. Rest In Peace Gene. You will be missed.

Sincerely,

James E. Demby, Jr.
