Obituary for Gary Lee Furlong

On Wednesday, February 5, 2020, Gary Lee Furlong, loving husband and father of three children, passed away at the age of 77.

Gary was born on February 18, 1942 in Canonsburg, PA to John and Madeline Furlong. He entered the Air Force in April 1964 and remained in the Air Force until April 1968, including a deployment to Okinawa. On August 17, 1968 he married Linda Margaret Kates. After leaving the military Gary worked for American Airlines as a mechanic until he retired in 2006. Gary, along with his wife Lynn, raised two sons, Scott and Kurt, and one daughter, Katie.

Gary loved traveling with his wife including trips to Alaska and Hawaii. Gary loved goofing off with his daughter and spoiling her. He had a passion for hunting with his sons and gathering with friends in Pennsylvania. Gary enjoyed spending time with his family and frequently traveled to his cabin in Somerset, PA. To those who didn’t know Gary well he appeared to have a tough exterior, although to his grandchildren he was a big teddy bear. Gary was known for his service to the church as well as the community and was always willing to lend a hand to everyone he knew. Gary was always on the go looking for new projects around the house, yard, or the church.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents John and Madeline Furlong.

He is survived by his wife Lynn, his five children, Scott, (Kathy), Kurt, (Sheri), and Katie, his six grandchildren, Madison, Morgan, Alexandra, Hayden, Gavin, and Hailey. He is also survived by his brother John Furlong, sister Nancy Dyson, as well as many nieces, nephew, and cousins.

A celebration of life will be held at St. Thomas United Methodists Church Saturday, February 15, 2020 at 3pm. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Gary Furlongs name to the IPF Foundation (Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis). Donations can be made by going to the following link.
