Obituary for Gary S. Lindsey

Gary S.  Lindsey
Gary Shelton Lindsey, 69, of Woodbridge passed away on September 18, 2019 while vacationing with his family in New York City.

Gary was born on April 3, 1950 In Rome, Georgia and was the son of the late Shelton and Sibyle Tucker Lindsey. He grew up in the nearby town of Cave Spring, where he played basketball for the Cave Spring Yellow Jackets and was valedictorian of his class. He graduated from Georgia Tech with an undergraduate degree In Electrical Engineering and earned a master’s degree in Business Administration from Florida Institute of Technology. He married Myra, also from Cave Spring, in 1972. He was father of Eryn, the joy of his life, and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Manassas.

Gary worked for Harris Corporation for almost 40 years, where he served first as a systems test engineer and later as a system engineer, eventually becoming a section head in each department. Gary’s Harris career culminated in his role as senior scientist and architect of secure videoconferencing systems for the government. He was frequently recognized by senior government leadership as setting a standard of excellence for others to follow.

Gary loved spending time with Eryn, especially their Thursday night dinners together. He enjoyed woodworking and built the beautiful cabinets in the family kitchen. He also created many fine pieces of furniture, most recently a desk for Eryn. He enjoyed working on his computer and developed an accounting system for his personal finances. He loved vacationing with his family; particularly exploring New York City and taking the Auto Train with his family to Disney World. In earlier years, Gary dabbled in astronomy, and played tennis and softball with his engineering pals.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Myra; his beloved daughter, Eryn; his brother, Robin and wife, Kathy; one niece, Jessica Patterson Stephens and husband, Cory; four nephews, Christopher Lindsey and wife Melanie; Jonathan Lindsey and wife Katie; Chase Patterson and wife, Taylor; Camden Patterson; and one great-nephew, Holden Stephens.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. (visitation at 10:00 a.m.) at Grace United Methodist Church in Manassas, with The Rev. Drew Colby officiating and The Rev. Janet Salbert and The Rev. Dr. John T. Martin, Jr. assisting. A graveside service will be conducted at Bacon Race Cemetery in Woodbridge at 2:00 p.m.
