Some little memories of Herm

I have known Herm since we were graduate students together and I admired him there for his personal open-mindedness, sincerity and camaraderie. Over the next few decades we stayed in technical contact, he as a leading expert at the NASA Dryden Research Center in Edwards and I as the head of a research institute at the German Aerospace Center. Both of us were well versed in the field of aircraft system identification associated with flight testing. We were both national members of specialist groups that worked on behalf of NATO. At an event that took place here in Braunschweig, we both made an excursion to the wooded zone border between the then still divided zones of West and East Germany. We were so engrossed in a scientific discussion on a walk that we only noticed the zone boundary pillar when we were already a few tens of meters on the territory of the communist German Democratic Republic (GDR). I was shocked, but thank God no border guard fired on us.

My wife Hanni and I will always remember Herm and, of course, Sharon as our dearest unforgettable American friends. Last Sunday I had just shown our granddaughter Carolina the beautiful sketch of Marlene Dietrich's face that Herm had given us at the time. So Herm's work of art will have a long life in our family.

I am very grateful that Herm was able to write an impressive foreword to our book Hamel & Park: "The Learjet History" in the past few weeks. I sent a copy of the book to Herm just on my birthday, on July 12th.

Herm, have a good time, you were a very fine fellow
