Obituary for Hilde Kellner DeWolf

Hildegard Kellner DeWolf, age 92, died on October 26, 2016 at Gainesville Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Hilde was born on May 19, 1924 in Furth, Germany to the late Christian and Carolina Kellner.

During the Allied Occupation of Germany at the end of World War II, she met and married Robert DeWolf, a Belgian who had worked as a translator for the American Army. Hilde and Bob immigrated to the United States in 1949, shortly after their son Peter was born. They settled in Manassas, near their American sponsor Jimmy Davis, Jr. Hilde spoke no English when she arrived in Manassas, but taught herself English by reading comic books.
Hilde retired from Crestar Bank (formerly People’s National Bank) after 30 years. She and her husband Bob also owned “The European Delicatessen” in Manassas for 20 years. She was an active member of All Saints Catholic Church, where she served on the Bereavement Committee and mentored at the Elementary School. She loved knitting and crocheting and spent countless hours knitting blankets and caps for newborns at the hospital.

Hilde was predeceased by her husband Bob and her son Jimmy. She is survived by her son Pete DeWolf and his wife Bonnie of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren: Robert DeWolf of Gilbert, AZ, Clifton DeWolf of Manassas, and Erin Evans of Virginia Beach; and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her dear family members who have been so helpful and supportive: her sister and brother-in-law Elsa and Emiel Verdonck of Manassas; her nieces Annie Verdonck of Manassas, and Annette Fake of Nokesville; and her great-nephews Tyler, John, and Daniel Fake.

A mass will be held at All Saints Catholic Church, 9300 Stonewall Road, Manassas, VA, on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 10:00am, with Father Noah Morey officiating. Interment will be private at a later date.

The family would like to give special thanks to Hilde’s friend and neighbor Fay Crawford for her care and support. She is truly an angel.
