Obituary for James Gordon Barnum

James Gordon Barnum
James G Barnum “Jim”

On Thursday January 7 2021 after a long battle with COPD.

Jim was born on January 8 1938 in Ann Arbor MI and grew up in Denver CO. A cowboy at heart, he carried his love for the west throughout his life.

Jim leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Lois. He is also survived by his sister Beatrice Shenkenberg (Dave), niece Martha Shenkenberg, nephew Craig Shenkenberg (Amy), grand-nephew Beau Shenkenberg, grand-nieces Brooke and Alexa Shenkenberg and his dog, Dolly. He was preceded in death by his niece Jennifer Shenkenberg Jones.

Following 3 years’ service in Germany with the US Army Security Agency, Jim came to the Washington area in 1959 to attend Georgetown University and begin a 40-year career with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Jim met Lois at the Agency and after his graduation they were married. They moved to McLean VA where they lived for over 53 years before moving to Ashburn VA.

Jim lived a life filled with many friends, golfing, skiing trips and adventures around the world. He visited over 65 countries. He enjoyed cooking and he will be fondly remembered for his soups and pot roast. He loved every dog he ever had including his last, Dolly.

Jim never met a stranger. His voice would light up the room and make everyone feel welcome. He was one of a kind; a very special person. Jim will be missed far beyond any words can express. His was a life well lived.

The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim’s name to the Animal Guardian Network 2564 N Arena Del Loma Road Camp Verde AZ 86322.

Due to COVID restrictions a celebration of Jim’s life will be held later in 2021.
