Obituary for Karen Joyce Grano

Karen Joyce Grano, 64, of Manassas, VA passed away peacefully at Capital Caring Adler Center in Aldie, VA on February 20th, 2020.

She is survived by her beloved son Brandon Blatnick, her former spouse Steven Blatnick, her brother John Grano and his wife Cynthia, her nephews Jordan, Evin and Aidan Grano, and five grand nephews and nieces Arianna, Ryder, Griffin, Isabella and Treker Grano.

Karen was an artist and leaves the family with many paintings as heirlooms. After graduating from the University of Hartford with a BFA, she earned her master’s degree in Art Therapy from Hahnemann Medical College at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. She spent three decades helping families and children in crisis with art therapy and counseling, including drug rehabilitation and family programs, in the Philadelphia and south New Jersey area.

Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Karen was a warm engaging person who stayed connected with her extended family, including her many beloved cousins. She was a model parent along with Steve. She loved art history and was able to enjoy a trip to Italy and other Mediterranean countries with her son last fall despite her declining health. Karen resided in Glassboro, NJ for 20 years. She then lived 13 years in Virginia, the last 11 in Manassas where she had become active in state and local politics.

She had an engaging sense of humor, a wonderful warm laugh and was an excellent cook. She had a keen knowledge of film, and had been working on the manuscript of her first novel. She was a Philadelphia sports fan and fought to live every moment to the fullest, right to the end.

She will be deeply missed.
