Obituary for Kathryn Elizabeth Wilkins (Brown)

Kathryn E. (Brown) Wilkins, known as “Kay” to her friends and called “Bubby” by her family, passed away in her home on February 17, 2022; she was 93. She was born during the Great Depression on a farm in Ohio, where she spent the first decade of her life. Around age 11, her family moved to “town,” St. Marys, Ohio, where she walked to school every day. Their small home was closer to relatives and included the “modern” conveniences of electricity and indoor plumbing. In 1947, she graduated third in her class of 78 students from St. Marys Memorial High School. She attended Bowling Green State University; after completing 2 years of study, she married and moved to Ft. Wayne, Indiana, where she worked for 12 years before the birth of her only child, Marcia. In 1964, the family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where Kay worked as a legal secretary for Barnes, Hickam, Pantzer and Boyd (now Barnes & Thornburg) for 47 years. She loved Indianapolis and her work and retired at age 82. In 2014, she moved to Manassas, Virginia, where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law until her death.

She was a life-long Lutheran and active in her church, generously volunteering her time, talent and treasure. She enjoyed corresponding with her many friends and reading the Indianapolis Star every day. For her 89th birthday, she received a gift subscription to StoryWorth and, to the delight of her family, wrote over 50 stories detailing her childhood memories, life experiences and interests. Her stories became the chapters in her book that was published in 2019 -- a beautifully written narrative and treasured remembrance of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Oran J. and L. Opal (Paglow) Brown, and her older sister, the late Delores C. Brown. She is survived by her daughter, Marcia (Wilkins) Dolan and son-in-law, Thomas Dolan of Manassas, Virginia; granddaughter Kathryn Dolan and husband, Michael Izzi, of Rockland, Maine; and granddaughter Allison (Dolan) Thomas and husband, Blake Thomas, of Rockville, Maryland. She will be buried in St. Marys, Ohio.
