Obituary for Marilyn Mae Nunenkamp

Marilyn Knowlton Nunenkamp of Gainesville, Virginia passed away peacefully at home on December 18, 2020, a week after her 85th birthday.

Marilyn actually lived three lives - she was born and raised in Nampa, Idaho, where she was active in a number of school and community organizations and acquired her lifelong passion for tennis. She loved her high school friends and spending time among the mountains and wildflowers of Idaho. Marriage to Max Nunenkamp began her second, adventurous Air Force life; she had the dubious distinction of packing up, relocating, and reestablishing a household during each of her 3 pregnancies. During this active period she made a warm and loving home for her family. Upon Max’s death in 1989, Marilyn began her third life. After she finished raising their youngest child Jay and teaching herself significant financial acumen, Marilyn moved to Gainesville where she leapt into bridge, bunko, potlucks, and world travel with her close knit group of friends. She also faithfully sent loving care packages to all of her grandchildren 6 times per year (!); birthdays, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

In all endeavors she showed a brilliant attention to detail, a skill that she passed down now happily manifesting in her grandchildren.

Marilyn is survived by her sister Pat, brother Jay, children Terri, Erin, and Jay, and grandchildren Cory, Ashley, Nicole, Megan, Max, and Jack. She will join her husband Max in Arlington National Cemetery in 2021.
