Obituary for Marquis E. "Mark" Shriner

Marquis E. Shriner, 57, of Clifton, Virginia, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, March 18, 2024. Mark was born May 15, 1966, in Vermillion, South Dakota. With his older sister, Jan, he enjoyed childhood living on various Army posts in the US, including Oklahoma, California, Kansas, Kentucky and Virginia, as well as six adventure-filled years in Bavaria, Germany. An adorable, thrill-seeking youth, he often gave his parents angst, with humorous and terrifying antics. He graduated from Fort Campbell High School in Kentucky in 1984. He excelled in high school sports, running cross-country, and serving as the captain of the golf team. He attended Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky, graduating with a Bachelor’s in Business in 1988. He was so proud to be a PIKE (Pi Kappa Alpha) and served as the fraternity president. In college, he developed his love for construction over his summer breaks from school, working for several major builders in Northern Virginia. He branched out on his own to start Mark Shriner Contracting/Distinctive Deck Designs, which grew into a very successful contracting business. It was during these early years that he met his then wife, Charlet (Hoy) Shriner. They married in 1998 and had three children: Mackenzie (24), Colby (22), and Jack (18) who survive him. Mark considered his three children his greatest life’s accomplishment. Mark and Charlet co-parented in a way that became one of the most beautiful tapestries of his life. They blended families, including each other at every family holiday, and remained friends. Mark never missed a game, a horse-riding lesson, or an opportunity to teach the boys his love of hunting and fishing. Mark often visited his farm in Ohio to hunt with his son, Jack, and loved living the life of a farmer and hunter. Mark spent his final moments on this earth, doing what he loved, at his beloved home in Clifton, Virginia.

He is survived by his 3 children: Mackenzie, Colby, and Jack, his sister Jan Shriner, and his parents, Robert Shriner and Susan Shriner. He is preceded in death by both his maternal and paternal grandparents.

The service will be held at Baker Post Funeral Home in Manassas, Virginia on April 6, 2024. All are welcome. Visitation will begin at 10 am, with the Funeral Service being held at 11:00 am.

A celebration of life will immediately follow the service at Bristow Manor Golf Club, 11507 Valley View Drive, Bristow, VA 20136.
