Obituary for Merrill Linwood Mauney

Merrill Linwood Mauney
Merrill Linwood Mauney, Sr. entered eternal rest on April 27, 2021 after a brief illness. He was born in Washington, D.C. to the late Donald Wallace Mauney, Sr. and Ruth Elizabeth (Ransome) Mauney on April 11, 1949.

He moved with his family to Manassas, VA at the age of seven, where he enrolled in Jennie Dean Elementary and High School. He joined First Baptist Church of Manassas, VA at an early age, where he attended Sunday School and church services. While at Jennie Dean, Merrill developed a love of sports … baseball, basketball, and football. His father formed a little league baseball team of young boys in the neighborhood and surrounding areas. They traveled to other counties on Saturdays and Sundays, playing other teams and drawing crowds of cheering fans.

Merrill graduated from Osbourn High School in Manassas, VA in 1967. While a student, he drove a school bus … his first job of many through the years. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army. When he was honorably discharged, he continued to serve in the National Guard with his brother for several years and furthered his career working for Savings & Loan for over 18 years as a chauffeur.

Merrill was an avid motorist. He loved fast cars and even faster motorcycles. He thoroughly enjoyed his time spent with his buddies … buying vehicles, riding bikes, and fixing what broke down. One of many stories was Merrill taking you on a ride for his famous “one on one “get right talks. During his last years in this world, Merrill continued to give to others. He provided rides to school for many children; he took many people to the store and to doctor appointments; and insured that many people had their cars repaired so they could continue their daily lives. A few of the last words his charge nurse in the hospital said to his family were …” Mr. Mauney is a very nice man. His presence would brighten up the entire room. We will remember Merrill’s humble, caring, and respectful personality.

He leaves to lovingly cherish his memory, Roberta Mauney (wife), his children Merrill Mauney, Jr., Veronica Smith, Stephanie Matthews (Edwin), Franco Lacey (Nicole), Dana Outlaw-Jordan (Abram), Camille Boykin (Jesus); his step-children, Michael Hill, Larry Hill, Michelle Layne, Serena Hill-Johnson (Eric); 35 grandchildren; his sister, Donna Mauney-Tyler, his brother, Donald W. Mauney, Jr. (Lannette); two individuals with a very special place in his heart, Noel Chew (Amanda) and Teneile Robinson; and a host of loving and devoted family and friends.

Rest in peace … we love you.
