Rosemarie Hayes, beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt, passed away on April 23, 2023. Rosemarie was born to Rudy and Aurora Davalos in San Antonio, Texas, on June 2, 1935. She received her education in San Antonio and San Marcos, Texas. In 1956 she married a Marine, Jerome (Jerry) D. Hayes at the Marine Corps Air Facility Santa Ana, California. As the wife of a Marine and ultimately a mother of five, Rose Marie led a full and busy life. Among her many accomplishments throughout her life were: Dancing and teaching Hula that she learned when living in Hawaii. She was also a very talented artist, working primarily in oil painting, but also sculpture, and other mediums. She played piano and guitar as well. She was always active in her children’s PTA and was a Girl Scout Leader for several years. She volunteered as a Red Cross Instructor for several decades. She volunteered her leadership in various Enlisted Wives Club and Officer Wives Clubs at the various military bases where she lived. She was recognized as an “Outstanding Young Women in America” and was honored to be selected as “Military Wife of the Year” in 1971. Her passion, however, was coaching competitive swimming. She began as an assistant in 1970 in Houston, TX, and continued coaching at Camp Lejeune, NC, New Braunfels, TX, and Quantico, VA until she became the head coach of the Prince William County Swim Team (Amberjax) for over 35 years. She was a certified USA Swim Coach, and the Amberjax were a USA-certified team. While serving as head coach she also helped to establish Prince William County’s high school swimming program and became the first swim coach of Gar-field Senior High School. Coach Hayes deeply impacted the lives of hundreds of young athletes, helping them to reach their athletic, academic, and personal goals for over 40 years. She is preceded in death by her parents, Rudy and Aurora Davalos and her two grandchildren, Marshall and Jessica Frazier. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Major Jerry Hayes USMC (Ret), her children and their spouses: Linda Hayes, Kathy & Richard Frazier, Michael Hayes, Alicia and Bryant Johnson, Vanessa and Brian Leavitt, her brother Rudy Davalos Jr. and his wife Gail. In addition, there are 8 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was a strong presence in all our lives. Her absence will leave a hole that cannot be filled. She will be missed.
