Obituary for Shirrell Gene Moore

Shirrell Gene Moore passed away unexpectedly on April 7, 2021 at Prince William County Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Alice Wiggs, of 60 years. Also survived by his son Tim (daughter-in-law Kathy, grandsons Shane and Austin, and great-grandson Nolan), and son Ted (daughter-in-law Kathy, grandchildren Payton, Adison, and Jarrett). Preceding him is daughter Christina, son-in-law David and his granddaughter April Garbutt (deceased).

Born on August 8, 1938 in Del Rio, Tennessee, Shirrell was the son of Floyd & Leora Moore (deceased). He is preceded by his sisters, Evelyn, Ida Lee, Flossie and brother Junior (Floyd Jr). His surviving siblings are Sue (brother-in-law Buck) Smallwood, twin sister Shirley Stephens, and Patricia Moore. He is also survived by in-laws Archie and Charlotte Wiggs and John and Edythe Wiggs, along with many other cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He grew up as a young child in Vienna, VA and then spent his teenager years in Manassas, VA. He graduated from Osbourn High School in 1958. After high school he become a tile setter before being drafted into the US Army. In the Army he served as a Military Police officer. After the service, he worked as an auto mechanic and eventually ran his own Texaco gas station. During this time, he also worked as a US Capitol Police officer. He then took a position as a mechanic for the Department of Army at Ft Belvoir, so he could spend more time with his family. He finished his career working as a gunsmith at Ft Belvoir.

He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish, hunt and boat. He shared this passion with his family and friends. Many a cold morning was spent with his nephews & friends out in the woods. Spring & summer days he could be found at a fishing hole with a few buddies or family. He also loved taking all the family and friends out on his boat “Good Times”.

Family visitation will be held on Thursday April 15, 2021 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. at Baker-Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 10001 Nokesville Rd, Manassas, VA 20109. Service to immediately follow at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be held at Stonewall Memory Gardens, 12004 Lee Hwy, Manassas, VA 20109 after the service.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to a US National Park Service.
