Obituary for Thongphet Douangdara

Thongphet Douangdara
Thongphet Douangdara, 92, of Gloucester, Virginia, passed away on March 3, 2020 at home, surrounded by his beloved family.

Thongphet exemplified a life well lived. He was born in Vientiane, Laos and later married his wife and soul mate, Phommy Borivong. Together they had seventeen children. They unselfishly offered two of the greatest gifts that parents can give--unconditional love and support. Thongphet and Phommy sacrificed to give their children a better life than they had, seeking the opportunities available in the United States. Theirs is a legacy of love.

Thongphet learned from experience that the path to a full and long life was to understand that happiness came from within, achieved through peaceful perseverance; that success was to be met with humility and modesty; and that hardship was defeated with courage and strength. Thongphet passed on to his children these values, learned both as a former general in the Lao military and as a spiritual man devoted to his Buddhist faith. He showed through his actions the importance of personal discipline and accountability; the reward of hard work; the requirement of showing others respect and compassion; the virtues of generosity and selflessness; and the primacy of the Lao culture and traditions that were always in his heart.

Thongphet was constantly in motion, living a very active life until his last days. At the age of 92, he had just decided to take up golf. He also enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, biking, kayaking, gardening, feeding the birds, and spending time at the Buddhist Temple.

He is survived by his children, Ounhouan, Ounkeo, Ounchay, Sengdouane, Sengkham, Sengdao, Vilaysone, Bounygun, Chanthala, Honekham and Phoukhone and several cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Phommy and six of his seventeen children.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 12, 2020 from 11:00 – 12:00p.m. at Baker Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 10001 Nokesville Road, Manassas. Thongphet’s family invites you to celebrate his life beginning at 12:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
