Obituary for Gail M. Seely

Gail M. Seely
Gail Margaret Seely, 79, of Haymarket, passed away April 22, 2015 at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, MD after a year and a half courageously battling breast cancer which metastasized to the brain and spinal fluid.

Born December 8, 1935, in Culver City CA, she was the daughter of Dale and Marion Deverman. She attended K-12 in Catholic schools then attended UCLA. There she met her future husband, James M. Seely, in 1955 just before his graduation and commission as ensign, USNR. Gail was a sophomore, but had promised her parents that she would graduate. So, in 1957, when she graduated with a BA degree in Business Education, Gail and Jim were married on July 13, 1957 in Culver City, CA. After a brief honeymoon they embarked together on the rest of Jim’s 34 year Navy career. It was truly a team effort with Gail hefting most of the load of raising two children, organizing and maintaining the household, and actively serving and leading the officers and enlisted wife’s groups of each squadron and unit they were assigned to. Gail also served each community we lived in and was actively involved with the Catholic Parish at each duty station. During their Navy career Gail and Jim moved their household about 25 times and Gail and the children had to supervise many of the moves themselves while Jim was on nine extended deployments. Gail was up to any task and she maintained a positive, happy, supportive, and loving attitude throughout, no matter how difficult the situation. It can be said with assurance that Gail was universally loved wherever they lived. For the last 10 years Gail and Jim have been blessed to live in the Regency at Dominion Valley in Haymarket, among the most loving, supportive neighbors anyone could ask for. Gail has not only filled her family’s life with love, grace and happiness, she has done the same for her innumerable friends.

Gail also had a highly successful career outside the home. When the children were old enough she entered the work force. First she worked for First Virginia Bank (now BB&T), then spent time with a corporate re-location firm, followed by 13 years with the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Co. (Freddie Mac). She became a self taught expert in Information Technology and was Manager of IT at Freddie Mac.

In addition to her husband, Gail is survived by one daughter, Nina Dunleavy and her husband Daniel of Stephens City; one son, Ted Seely and his wife Susan of Centreville; and three grandchildren, Brandon and Michael Seely; and Jared Dunleavy. She is also survived by many other family members including two children, Chao Pan and Karli who call her Grandma. In addition Gail is survived by a multitude of friends gained throughout her remarkable life.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 30, 2015 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Baker-Post Funeral Home, 10001 Nokesville Road, Manassas, where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 in the funeral home chapel. A mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, May 1, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church, 23331 Sam Fred Rd, Middleburg, VA 20117.
