Manassas Neighbor

I met Col. Joe Dwyer and his beautiful wife, Carol, for the first time when they moved back into their home in Manassas in the 1980s. Soon after, we hosted a neighborhood party at our home and Joe and Carol attended along with all of our other neighborhood friends. Fun was had by all.  Evidently, Joe had more fun than he had anticipated, and the next morning he called me and said he was putting a For Sale sign in our yard to prevent it from happening again.  The best neighborhood story, however, was when Joe retired from the Marine Corps and was actively seeking employment. The theme of this party was the "tacky party." and Joe and Carol were hosting. Several of us showed up at his doorstep at 6:00 AM with toasts in hand. Later in the day, two of our friends stationed themselves outside of the Dwyer's  house with Salvation Army uniforms, ringing a bell, and asking for donations for our unemployed neighbor.  As you kow, Joe went on to a very successful second career in civilian life. I remember him with respect and friendship. He was a marvelous husband to his wife and dedicated father to his children. May God give peace to his family now.
