Obituary for John Brinton Holmes

John Brinton Holmes
John Brinton Holmes, 81, died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, April 19, 2016.

John was born in Montgomery, West Virginia on August 1, 1934, son of James Davis Holmes, a photographer, and Elizabeth Painter, a music teacher; He was born into a family passionate about music and he carried it with him through life, passing it on to his children and grandchildren along the way. Anyone who knew him well knows he wasn’t only a talented musician but also had a unique sense of humor. Generally he was quiet but those who were close remember lots of laughter while in his presence.

John met and fell in love with Barbara Jean Hiles, while attending a party and playing an old game called ‘Post Office’, when they were barely teenagers and after high school they were married on August 13, 1955; they had two children, Deborah and Johnny, and the family settled in the Northern Virginia area in the mid 1960’s. A hardworking and intelligent man, he got into the computer programming and ‘Coding’ field long before many knew what computers were. During most of his career he was employed with Page Communications, managing a group that respected him greatly and even twenty years later many attended the couple’s 50th wedding anniversary party and called him the best boss they ever had.

John’s other interests included sports, especially basketball and golf, walking, bike riding and relaxing at ‘Indian Acres, Club of Thornburg’ where they parked the little camper he’d inherited from his mother in 1978. After Johns retirement, he and Barbara could usually be found at ‘Indian Acres’ or in Port Charlotte, Florida, where they owned a condo, enjoying their golden years in the sun. Most of all his family knew he loved his wife Barbara dearly, who passed away 10 months prior, and it brings them comfort to imagine the two of them together again.

He is survived by his children Deborah and Johnny Holmes, grandchildren Lisa Wallace, Angela Smith, Darla Hopkins, Ashley Holmes, Brinton Holmes, Justin Holmes and Great-Grandchildren Donovan Hopkins, Heidi Hopkins, Madeline Hopkins, Christopher Palmer, Jordan Alexander and Acelin James.

Family will receive friends on Monday April 25, 2016 at 10:00am in the Baker-Post Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 10001 Nokesville Rd. Manassas, VA 20110. A Memorial Service will follow at 11:00am with Pastor
Todd Tennant officiating.

Interment will be private and at a late date.
