Growing up in Safford, Rex was always one to go on adventures and sometimes they were a little hazardous. The recent fire on Mount Graham reminded me of one such outing. One day in our youth, Rex invited me to join him on a hike, from the golf course ponds up to the base of Frye Mesa dam, which can be seen here: https://freerangerodeo.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/p1010938.jpg.
It was a long hike to the dam, and we had to shimmy on a large metal pipe near the base to avoid the foliage (with rattlesnakes?) to get to the bottom of the dam. We decided to climb a ladder (since removed) mounted on the face of the dam that allowed one to get to the top. The long hike and the fear factor set in on me about half way up the ladder (it had a bend in it!), but it was either climb to the top easily or back down with difficulty. Anyway, we survived that, rested a while on the top of the dam, and made our way to the bank of the reservoir. We were soon confronted with a storm pushing quickly over Mount Graham and generating lots of lightning strikes. We hightailed it down the mesa along a ridge line and somehow made it back to our vehicle, tired, but in good shape. We laughed about what we went through, but the thought of that hike still make me cringe when I relive it in my mind. I can picture Rex laughing in his usual animated manner. Rex was one of the people in my life who I never experienced any ill feelings towards...perhaps it has something to do with the fact he was born the day after me. He is forever engrained in who I am and I will miss him very much. Rest in peace, Rex. Wait up for me.
