Obituary for James Arthur Porter

James Arthur Porter
James Arthur "Jimmy" Porter died on April 9, 2023 (Easter Sunday). Jimmy was born on November 27, 1943, to the late Catherine O'Donoghue Porter and Daniel Thomas Porter. Jimmy attended Archbishop Carroll High School in D.C., class of 1961. At the age of 17 he joined the U.S. Army and served in the 5th Special Forces in Vietnam. Upon Jimmy's discharge he attended and graduated from U.C. Berkeley. He also played on the Cal Bears Football team during that time. Jimmy then went on to earn a Master's Degree in History from George Mason University. He worked for the U.S. Government and retired from the Department of Energy, EIA division in 2010.

After his marriage to his wife, Lola, in 1975 Jimmy took up playing the banjo, guitar, ukelele and wrote songs. He could often be found on the D.C. Mall during his lunch hour playing music for passers-by. Jimmy was always ready to stop and chat and have a few laughs with people he encountered there. For many years he also played music at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manassas.

Jimmy lost his brother Daniel T. Porter, Jr. in 2018. He is survived by one sister, Patricia Porter Carey of Delaware, his loving and devoted wife, Lola, a son, Curtis J. Porter (Hye-ryun) of Pittsburgh, daughter Robin Porter Shawn (Jason) of Manassas, 4 grandchildren, Noah Porter, Evan Porter, Keegan Shawn and Avery Shawn, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jimmy was a generous father and grandfather who deeply loved all his family. Those who remember Jimmy will recall his big smile, hearty laughter, passion for life and deep friendship and love for so many people.

The family will receive friends on May 20, 2023, from 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. at the Baker-Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 10001 Nokesville Road, Manassas. A memorial service will immediately follow at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Father John Mudd, friend and classmate from Archbishop Carroll H.S. officiating.
