Obituary for David Carl Poe

David Carl Poe
With great sadness we announce that David Carl Poe, our beloved husband, father, papa, and brother, passed away in the arms of his family on Tuesday August 16th, 2022. He was 65 years old and a truly great man. David fought fiercely during his battle with cancer and always held out hope until the very end. He never lost his positive attitude, nor fighting spirit, and wanted all of the medical personnel and his family and friends to know how much he appreciated their love and support.

Born on January 29th, 1957, to Carl and Beulah (Smith) Poe, David was the first born of his family and grew up with with his brothers Danny and Larry and his sister Teresa. In his younger years, David channeled his competitive nature into sports, most notably in playing baseball, golf, and tennis as well as racing motorcycles and water skiing. Later in life, his competitive energy shifted towards fantasy sports. Whether it was baseball, football, racing or golf, he was a master at managing his teams and was quite proud to dominate every season he played. Growing up admiring the winning record of his favorite team, Alabama Crimson Tide, he adopted the mindset and life lessons of Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. David proclaimed that "Bear" was next to God in his eyes!

The true love & joy of David's life was Karen Smith. As childhood sweethearts, they were married in 1975 - he was 17, she was 16. Through all of life's twists and turns, they never left each other's sides in 50 years together and 47 years of marriage. The two were inseparable and truly grew more in love with every passing day. They had two beautiful daughters, Mandy and Misty. David loved watching his "wolf pack" grow and was ecstatic to welcome his sons-in-law, Eric Snyder (Mandy) and Paul Claveloux (Misty). His family was made complete with the birth of his four precious grandchildren, Skye and Sean Snyder and Judah and Eden Claveloux. God and family were everything to him and he enjoyed every minute with them. He prayed every night, not for himself but for others along his path. Whether he was making up nicknames for his family or telling seemingly unbelievable stories, David was a larger than life presence who is truly missed.

David is survived by his wife Karen; daughters, Mandy Snyder (Eric) and Misty Claveloux (Paul); grandchildren, Skye & Sean Snyder and Judah & Eden Claveloux; brothers Danny (Diane) and Larry (Angie). Additionally, he leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, in-laws, aunts and uncles,
cousins and friends whom he loved. He is predeceased by his father, mother, and sister Teresa.

One of David's favorite sayings was, "Never let anything steal your joy." While that has been difficult to do since his passing, David's family is going to take him at his word and will be holding a celebration of his life at 1:00 PM on Friday, November 25th 2022 at the Pine Level Community Center 119 County Road 40 East in Prattville, AL 36067. Reception to follow.
