Obituary for David Vinson

David Vinson
David Vinson Sr, a 22 year veteran of the U.S. Army, was born on January 31, 1941, in Ahoskie, North Carolina. He was the third child and first-born son to the late Donnie Vinson, Jr. and Eleather Futrell Vinson.

David entered the Army in 1959 as an infantryman, and, when he retired from the Army in 1982, was recognized as an expert in Transportation and Logistics. Over the course of his military career, he had several duty stations that took him to places all over the world and the United States, and included places like South Korea, Kansas, Vietnam, Germany, Panama, North Carolina, Georgia, Washington D.C. and Virginia. While in Korea in 1962, he met and married his beautiful wife Chong, the love of his life.

Following his Army career, David worked as a Deputy Sheriff for the City of Newport News, and earned an Associate's degree in Business from St. Leo University. He then chose to serve his country again as a civil servant in federal service at the Pentagon. It was during this period that he was a key contributor to the logistical planning of U.S. troop and material movement to Saudi Arabia during the first gulf war. Upon retiring from civil service, David became a government contractor in 2004. Working with Northrop Grumman, he supported the United States Army in South Korea as a transportation and logistical expert in support of logistics in the Pacific region. David fully retired in 2010 after working nearly 50 years in service to his country.

Prior to his retirement, David developed an interest in his family genealogy. He happily devoted time researching everything he could about the Vinson and Futrell family trees. His primary joy, however, came from spending time with his family and, especially, his grandchildren. He passed away peacefully on January 2, 2023 surrounded by family and loved ones.

David was preceded in death by his brother Kenny; sisters Elenia and Dorothy, and brothers-in-law Winfred Hardy, Jr., Larry Parker and Daniel Dorsey.

David is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Chong Hi (Cho) Vinson; children David Jr., Lisa and Anthony; grandchildren Tessa, Eddie, Alexis and Jalin; great grandchild Elliana; brothers Joseph, Jacob, Lee and Donald; sisters Shirley and Phyllis, and a host of loving relatives and friends.
