Obituary for Ida H. Welch

Ida Helen (Pond) Welch departed this earthly life to run into the arms of her Lord Jesus Christ on Friday, June 17, 2022.

She was one of four children born to Addison and Alberta Helen Pond in Battleboro, VT on Sept. 6, 1947.
Ida Welch is predeceased by her parents, her husband Herman A. Welch, stillborn son Mark Welch, grand-daughter Kimberly N. Welch, brother-in-law Kenneth Lane, and sister-in-law Polly Pond.

Ida spent her childhood in rural Brattleboro, VT, with three devoted siblings to grow up with, and a fondness for horses. As a teenager, she enjoyed riding horses and worked at the nearby racetrack. After graduation from Brattleboro High School in 1965, she married a local carpenter, Herman A. Welch, in Brattleboro, VT. Two sons, Richard and Michael, were born in 1966 and 1968 respectively, and provided many years of joy and purpose to her life. They lived in several homes throughout the years, including rural Kentucky, Covington, VA, Phoenix, AZ, and Springfield, VA before settling in Dale City, VA permanently.

Ida retired from her position as a U.S.P.S. mail carrier for the Fairfax City area after 20 years of service. Her retirement years were full of activity, marked with the sincere desire to help others less fortunate than her. She worked at the Street Light Homeless Shelter and the Church of Christ food pantry, both of Woodbridge, VA. In addition, she offered her home as a temporary shelter and her car for driving others to appointments. Ida provided warm companionship wherever she was needed and did so with a willing heart.

Favorite pastimes included numerous visits with the Nissley family and the Mennonite community in Nokesville, VA, enjoying the farm life, the animals, and assisting with quiltmaking. Her love of Amish country brought her and her son, Michael, to Lancaster, PA several times to explore the city and take in musical productions at The Sight and Sound Theatre. Family gatherings were always important to her, no matter what distance she needed to travel in order to visit with family members far away.

Those left to remember Ida Welch's memory include her siblings: Juanita (Pond) Lane of Brattleboro, VT, Marlene (Pond) Heinonen and spouse Robert Heinonen of Winchester, NH, George Pond of Vernon, VT; two sons: Richard Welch of Troy, VA, and Michael Welch and spouse Heather Welch of Gordonsville, VA.; 4 nieces and their families, 7 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and her beloved Yorkshire terriers, Boss and Izzy.

In addition, Ida leaves behind many devoted friends, especially David Emdee, Eleanor Antwi, Gary Quinter, David Woodfin, Bertha O'Neill, the Nissley family and the Mennonite community of Nokesville, VA. The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Care with Love and Capital Care Hospice for their compassionate care for Ida during this time.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2022, at Baker-Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 10001 Nokesville Road, Manassas, VA 20110.

Interment will be in Woodbine Cemetery, 12914 Canova Drive, Manassas, VA 20112.
