Obituary

Judith “Judy” Ann Rose, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away in Gainesville, Virginia on Tuesday December 10, 2019. Judy was preceded in death by her parents and her older brother, James Rayner. She is survived by her husband Marty, her daughter Heather (Michael Chase) Rose-Chase, her son Martin (Victoria) Rose, grandsons Michael Colyer-Rose, Nathan Chase, Benjamin Chase, and granddaughter Viviana Rose, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Judy was born in Buffalo, New York on April 7, 1943, the second child of Jay and Thelma (Lindermann) Rayner. She developed serious lung issues as an infant and the family relocated to the desert of Ajo, Arizona to escape the cold, wet New York winters which were taxing to her health. Her childhood was spent near the native lands of the Tohono O’dham Tribe and she told many colourful stories of spending time playing outdoors in the rugged, natural environment. The family moved to Torrance, California in her teens, where Judy graduated from Torrance High School in 1961. She travelled extensively throughout Europe and the Pacific Islands in her early adulthood.

Judy married Martin “Marty” Ernest Rose on February 19, 1970. Together they had two children and four grandchildren. Judy and Marty made their home in California until 2011 when they moved to Lucedale, Mississippi for eight years. They had been residents of Virginia since May of 2019.

Despite her fiery red hair, piercing blue eyes, and loud, bubbly laughter, Judy never enjoyed being the center of attention. Content to be part of the crowd, she could always be found serving in the background at any event or gathering. She was well-liked with a close group of friends. She served as President of the YWCA, exhibited her art which won several awards, and was an active leader in the 4-H program during her children’s teenage years, raising horses, pigs, and poultry.

Judy’s deep and unshakable faith in Christ sustained her throughout her entire life, and she was faithful to pray immediately and regularly when someone came to her with their struggles. She was a spiritual mentor to many people through the years who still count her as the biggest positive influence in their lives.

Judy was a fierce and loyal supporter of her family, and her grandchildren were the biggest joy of her life. She will be deeply missed by her husband and family, and all who had the privilege to know her and be loved by her.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 21st, 2019 from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at Baker-Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 10001 Nokesville Road, Manassas, VA 20110.

A Celebration of Life service will follow at 12:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.

We have known Judy and Marty since they started attending Manassas Baptist Church this spring. Sadly, by the time they moved to Manassas, Judy's dementia prevented us from getting to know her better. But as we came to know them, it was clear how much they loved and trusted each other. Marty shared with us his love story of their meeting and romance that led to their wonderful life together. It was clear how attuned they were to each other, as they were able to communicate even after her stroke and other complications. The love shined through even at the most challenging times. We are sorry we never got to know Judy prior to the advent of her disease, but it is clear from Marty's dedication and the family's loving care for her that she was something special.
As fellow believers, we hold fast to our trust that Judy is already embraced by our Savior, and standing in the glory and aura of our heavenly Father. May God grant comfort and peace to all of Judy's loved ones.
