Obituary for Nancy Gayle Alvey (Lockridge)

Nancy Gayle Alvey (Lockridge)
Nancy Gayle Lockridge Alvey, age 88, died on November 25, 2014, at Fauquier Hospital in Warrenton, VA, due to complications from pneumonia.

Mrs. Alvey was a life long resident of Virginia. She was born Sept. 11, 1926, in Covington. The youngest of six children, she was predeceased by her parents, Clifton Hiley Lockridge and “Reathie” Loving Lockridge, as well as her three brothers and two sisters. She attended Covington High School, where she was active in many clubs as well as cheerleading. Upon her graduation in 1947, the family moved to Roanoke, VA, where she worked at a photography studio. It was in Roanoke where she met her future husband, James W. Alvey, Jr., who was an Army pal of her brother. They were married on July 3, 1947 in Roanoke, Va. In the early 1950s, they moved to Catharpin, VA, located in Prince William County, where her husband, known there as “Jack”, was born and raised. It was here that they settled, built their own home and raised their four children.

Nancy was a loving wife and mother, who led a busy social life, and also found time to be a businesswoman. She and Jim, her husband of 48 years, took business trips together with Piedmont Federal Savings and Loan, square danced with the Star Twirlers, and enjoyed community barn dances and parties. Nancy volunteered as a Pink Lady at Prince William Hospital, gave swimming lessons on Bull Run Mountain, and was a part of the Junior Woman’s Club of Manassas. She was a devoted mom to all of her children, helping with homework, driving them to and from scout meetings and music lessons, and going to Sudley Club to swim and socialize in the summers. She enjoyed sewing their fancy clothes, then took pictures of the kids and developed the photos at home. In her spare time, Nancy was an artist with a focus on oil paintings. She loved to shop, which led to her opening her own business in the early 1960s. Nancy bought the old schoolhouse in Catharpin, refurbished it, and opened The Little Red Schoolhouse Antique Shop on Rt. 234 in Catharpin, VA. She owned and operated this for several years until she became too ill to continue.

Nancy resided in Catharpin with her husband until his death in 1996. She lived her final years in Catlett, VA, under the care of Esther and Alvin Miller. The family expresses their sincere gratitude to the Millers for the wonderful love and care given to their Mom.

Nancy is survived by her four loving children and their spouses: Charlotte Gayle Kay [Ira], Jeanette “Daisy” Reynolds [Rodney], “Jim” J. W. Alvey III [Patty], and “Ann” Elizabeth Thornsbury [Dick]. She also leaves behind eleven grandchildren: Greg McDanolds, Rachel Kay, Jacob Kay, and Samantha Kay, Stephanie Reynolds, Joshua Alvey, Kristen Ramey, Jonathan Alvey, Ashley Alvey, Daniel Carter, and Carissa Thornsbury, as well as eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive visitors on Sunday, December 7, 2014, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at Baker-Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 10001 Nokesville Road, Manassas, Virginia.

Funeral and Interment Services will be held Monday, December 8th at 11:00 A.M. at Sudley United Methodist Church in Catharpin, Va., 5308 Sudley Road, with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Sudley Church for the cemetery fund,
P.O. Box 96, Catharpin, VA, 20143.
