It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Nancy J. Daugherty, aged 84 of Haymarket, Virginia. Mrs. Daugherty died at Fairfax Hospital on December 22, 2020 at approx 10:25pm with many close family members by her side, including her sons Clay, Kevin and Walter (Ted) and his wife Luz Johnson. Her death was due to complications from an in-home falling accident and was not Covid-19 related. In recent weeks, she resided at the Sunrise Care home in Oakton, Virginia.

Nancy was born on March 7, 1936 in Roanoke, Virginia as Nancy Jean Roberts, the fourth of five daughters of John C. Roberts and Julia Smith Roberts.

Nancy is preceded by her parents John C. Roberts and Julia Smith Roberts of Roanoke, VA., sisters Beryl Atkinson of Hampton Roads, VA, Helen Conrad of Fairfax, VA and Suzanne (Susie) Barton of Bethesda, MD and Walter C. Johnson, her first husband.

Nancy graduated high school in 1954 in Roanoke, VA and worked as a secretary for several businesses in Roanoke before applying to Madison College where she was accepted. However, rather than attending college, Nancy married Walter Johnson in Roanoke on September 4, 1954. Nancy gave birth to 5 sons, William Clayton (Clay) Johnson born September 14, 1955 in Roanoke, VA, Mark Roberts Johnson born March 7, 1958 in Roanoke, VA, Kevin Michael Johnson born September 13, 1960 in Arlington, VA, Scott Johnson, born September 25, 1961 in Arlington, VA (Scott lived for 6 short weeks, a victim of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) and Walter Edward Johnson born April 5, 1965 in Manassas, VA.

In 1962, Nancy began a long and successful career as a civilian in the U.S. Navy Dept. earning many promotions until retiring in 1987 as a GS-13 as Security Assistance Specialist, Navy Office of Technology Transfer and Security Assistance. On January 30, 1983 Nancy married John Marshall Daugherty at the Unity Church of Fairfax, VA. which coincidentally is directly across the street from the Sunrise Care home where she resided in her final weeks.

John had 3 children David, Margaret and Sherryl. Nancy loved and accepted John’s children as her own and she finally had daughters, whom she adored and always longed for. David Daugherty is married to Leslie of Atlanta, GA, and have two children Patrick and Megan. Patrick is married to Elizabeth and they have a daughter, Grace. Megan is married to Phillip Kautzman. Margaret (Maggie) is married to Mark Hogan of Virginia Beach, VA and they have three children, Katie, Sarah and Jake. Sherryl is married to Bruce Knoebel of Rochester, NY. They have 3 children, all married. Rob Knoebel and his wife Becky Knoebel and they have a daughter Adeline. Dan Knoebel who is married to Kristen Knoebel and Mitch Knoebel who is married to Amber Knoebel.

Nancy and John had a very loving relationship that lasted until his death on January 12, 2012. They shared many mutual interests including the Unity Church, a love of music including singing in the church choir and golfing, both watching and playing. For many years they resided at the Evergreen Country Club in Haymarket, VA., and more recently the Regency Club at Dominion Valley in Haymarket, VA.. Nancy and John were also long-time members of the Grace United Methodist Church in Manassas, VA.

Nancy is survived by her sister Martha (Marty) Hodges of Roanoke, VA., sons William C. (Clay) Johnson and his wife Yan Johnson, Mark Roberts Johnson, Kevin Michael Johnson and Walter Edward (Ted) Johnson and his wife Luz Johnson and Lynne Johnson of Centreville, VA. and Grandchildren Chase Johnson and his wife Mari Johnson, Sarah Johnson, Matthew Johnson, Katherine Johnson, Andrew Johnson, William Johnson, Andrew Johnson and Parker Adair.

Mrs. Daugherty will be interred with her late husband John Marshall Daugherty at Arlington National Cemetery. Due to Covid-19, the funeral will be delayed 12-18 months.
