Obituary for Norma Hemstreet
Norma Hemstreet, 89, passed away at 3:10 AM on Saturday, February 5, 2022, in the hospice care of Transitions LifeCare at the Windsor Point CCRC in Fuquay Varina, NC. Her husband and their 2 children were at her bedside.
Norma was born October 28, 1932—raised and educated in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She graduated from the University of Brazil in Natural History and became a teacher in several Rio schools. Born with a curiosity of the world Norma immigrated to the United States in 1962 landing in Washington, DC.
While working in DC, she met Andrew J. Hemstreet and they married—twice, a civil ceremony in Brazil, and a religious ceremony in DC. They moved to the Virginia suburbs of DC where Norma retired in 1999 after teaching in the Fairfax County School System for 27 years. The next 15 years were spent touring on six of the seven continents before moving to NC.
Her husband of nearly 58 years, her son, and her daughter, 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, survives Norma.
Graveside and interment services will be held on Friday, February 11, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at Stonewall Memory Gardens, 12004 Lee Highway, Manassas, VA.
