Obituary for Paul Florent Gibson

Paul Florent Gibson, 89, of Manassas, formerly of Acton, MA, passed away August 8, 2008 at Manassas Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born March 5, 1919 in Pittsburgh, PA, he was the son of Florent and Beatrice Wertz Gibson. On November 4, 1941 in Pittsburgh, PA, he married the former Jeanne Sheldon (nee Shangraw), who preceded him in death on January 8th, 2001.

Mr. Gibson graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science Degree Cum Laude in Mechanical Engineering, and a minor in Aeronautics. He started his professional career at the Naval Aircraft Factory, Philadelphia, PA, where he designed aircraft and missile systems during and after WWII. After serving as the Chief Engineer at Wing Engineering, he and two associates founded Spar Engineering and Development Corporation. He subsequently worked for the RCA Corporation as an engineer and program manager in Moorestown, NJ, Burlington, MA, and Vint Hill Farms Station, VA. His business travel took him to 5 continents. He was a faithful member of All Saints Catholic Church, and along with his wife, was a very active member of the Meals on Wheels program. They loved ball room dancing, community theater, and bridge. He was an accomplished woodworker, avid golfer, musician, and loving father. He had a good sense of humor, loved words games, and always had a good joke to share with friends and family.

Besides his wife, Paul was preceded in death by one brother, Rev. John Gibson. Survivors include one son, Paul S. Gibson and his wife Vicky of Manassas; three daughters, Andrea Beranek and her husband Bernard of Pittsburgh, PA; Jeannette Bahre of Wells, ME; Bernadette McConnell and her husband Christopher of Manassas; one sister, Mary Winter and her husband Norbert of Pittsburgh, PA; 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial at All Saints Catholic Church, 9300 Stonewall Rd. Manassas, on Wednesday, August 13th, 2008 at 10:00. The Rev. James Tucker will be the Celebrant.

Interment will follow in Stonewall Memory Gardens, Manassas, VA.

Memorial contributions may take the form of a donation to Capital Hospice, 10530 Linden Lake Plaza, Suite 200, Manassas, VA 20109.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Baker-Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 10001 Nokesville Rd. Manassas.
