Obituary for Richard Henry Dement, III

Richard Henry Dement, 75, of Haymarket Virginia passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on May 31, 2014.

Richard was preceded in death by his first wife Sharon. He is survived by wife Sylvia; daughters Laurie Hartman, Debbie Dement, and Wendy Dement; son-in-law, Joseph Hartman; granddaughters Julia Hartman and Emma Hartman; sister, Lynn Dement and his dog Mark. Richard was an extremely loving father, husband, grandfather and loyal friend.

A scholar athlete at the University of Maryland, Richard played football, was active in the student council, and enjoyed DJ'ing for WMUC. He met Sharon and they married in the Chapel. Richard began his career as a teacher and as his family grew, moved on to work for Catholic Charities, several construction equipment sales companies and Giant Food where he met his second wife Sylvia.

In his spare time, Richard was passionate about the outdoors and could usually be found hunting, fishing, growing his prized heirloom tomatoes or relaxing on the deck in Hatteras. He loved dogs and raised English Setters and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. An avid photographer, reader and life-long learner, Richard loved to help others and touched many lives.

A memorial service celebrating Richard's diverse and rich life will be held June 28, 2014 from 2:00 until 4:00 PM at the Baker-Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 10001 Nokesville Road, Manassas Virginia. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Monticello Gardens Cemetery in Charlottesville, VA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lustgarten Foundation.
