Obituary for Robert Murray Beasley

Robert Murray Beasley, 84, of Gainesville, went to be with the Lord on September 13, 2007 after a brief illness.

Born May 27, 1923, in Utica, Mississippi, he was the son of Willie F. and Ethel Collier Beasley. On October 13, 1942 in Russell, Kentucky, he married the former Doris Virginia Painter, who survives.

Bob was a self-made man, serving in WWII (Air Corps), and spending several years in radio as an announcer / engineer, hosting “Easily with Beasley”, a big band radio program. He served as the Director of Travel and Tourism, and special assistant to the Governor of Kentucky for about 12 years. Bob later worked for the Federal Aviation Administration, and then transferred to the Office of the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation where he served as a Program Coordinator and Special Projects Director. He served as a speech writer for Elizabeth Dole and also had the honor of working with Marlin Fitzwater. One of his proudest accomplishments was traveling with General Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. around the country to promote the implementation of the 55 mile-per-hour-Speed Limit Program. Mr. Beasley, along with his wife are members of Manassas St. Thomas United Methodist Church in Manassas.

Besides his loving wife of 65 years, Doris V. Painter Beasley of Gainesville, he is survived by one daughter, Kathi Lynn Green (Drew) of Eureka Springs, AR; one son, Robert S. Beasley (Cecelia) of Sterling; four sisters, two brothers, three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many loving brother and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Monday, September 17, 2007 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Manassas St. Thomas United Methodist Church, 8899 Sudley Road, Manassas. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at 11:00 in the Church Sanctuary with the Rev. Tommy Herndon, Jr. and Pastor Darrell Walter officiating. Graveside services with military honors will take place in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar, West Virginia on Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at 2:00 p.m.

Memorial contributions may take the form of a donation to the Manassas St. Thomas United Methodist Church Building Fund, 8899 Sudley Road, Manassas, VA 20110.
