Obituary for Robert Dean Rice Jr.

Robert Dean Rice Jr.
Robert Dean Rice, Jr. of Culpeper, VA, passed away Sunday, March 19, 2023.

Bob was born September 5, 1942, in Washington D.C. to Grace Adams Rice and Robert Dean Rice, Sr. Bob was a quiet and loving man, known for his kindness and love of family. He and his surviving wife of 53 years, Kay Wiggs Rice, centered their lives around their two children and seven grandchildren enjoying family gatherings and card games, attending their grandkid’s concerts and sporting events, celebrating at Lake Gaston, NC and remaining active in church. Bob was a dedicated servant, serving in numerous church leadership roles throughout his life.

Bob graduated in 1971 from Virginia Tech where he was a member of Pi Kappa fraternity. After college he developed a career in the construction industry and eventually founded Rice Contracting Corporation. Much like Bob himself, his site development company provided a valuable foundation for others to build upon.
Bob served in the United States Army and was passionate about his beliefs in the American system of democracy. He also was a voracious reader with a stack of books always at the ready. Throughout his life, Bob could often be found at an easel, painting abstracts or landscapes. But Bob was happiest when viewing his greatest composition, his family. Most recently he enjoyed long drives through the Shenandoah Mountains in one of his favorite possessions, his ruby red Ford F150 pick-up truck, with Kay by his side.

Bob’s surviving children and family include his son Kevin Dean Rice and wife, Carol Mirko Rice, and daughter, Jennifer Anne Mintz and husband Richard Troy Mintz. Grandchildren include Allison Grace Rice, Andrew Dean Rice, Ethan Michael Rice, Elizabeth Christine Rice, Joshua Francis Rice, Georgia Anne Mintz and Jackson Troy Mintz. Bob is also survived by his brother, Randall V. Rice and his spouse Janice Rice and sister Carolyn Brown.
