Obituary for Ruth Dawn Scimeca

Ruth Dawn Scimeca
Ruth “Dawn” Scimeca (Tanner), 84, passed away on March 12, 2021 at her son’s residence in Sevierville, TN.

Born and raised Ruth Dawn Cramer in Carbondale, PA, Dawn met and married William “Bill” Edward Tanner, Sr, also of Carbondale. Happily married for 47 years, she had five children. Mom and Bill lived in various locations in New York, New Jersey, Texas, and Oahu, Hawaii. Their primary home was in Vienna, Virginia.
While living in Oahu, mom fell in love with the Hawaiian people and culture. She developed a love for Hawaiian quilting, where she mentored under a local master quilter.

In addition to her quilting, throughout her life mom owned a dress shop in Carbondale, had a strong love of needlework, singing in the church choir, camping, and traveling to locations across the continental US as well as Alaska, China, Greece, Italy, Belgium, and the Bahamas.

After 47 loving years together, Bill passed to be with the Lord in 2003. Years later, Dawn met and married Fred V. Scimeca of Vienna, VA in 2011. Mom and Fred spent 9 loving years together before Fred’s passing in 2020.

A significant part of mom’s life included a strong friendship with Janice “Jan” Miller-Wythe of Buffalo, NY. The relationship was so close that mom and dad included Jan in many family activities including a 3-month cross country camping trip. Jan remains a significant member in the lives of mom’s children.

Dawn is survived by her 5 children; Virginia A. Crocker (David), William E. Tanner (Michelle), Jr., Richard C. Tanner (Carin), Alan A. Tanner (Donna), and Debra M. Tanner. Also survived by 8 grand-children, 16 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

Services will be held on Saturday, March 20, 2021 in the chapel of the Baker-Post Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Manassas, VA. Due to COVID-19 guidelines, social distancing and masks are required. Dawn will be laid to rest at a later date in private ceremony at Stonewall Memory Gardens, Manassas, VA with her first husband, Bill.
