Sara Jane Lightner Alvey, age 86, of Catharpin, Virginia passed away at home November 21, 2014 in the comfort of her immediate family. Born September 10, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Samuel N. and Bernice T. Lightner of Haymarket, Virginia. She attended primary school in Haymarket and graduated from Osbourn High School in Manassas, Va. where she was active in student activities and excelled in basketball. On May 1, 1948 she married the late Robert W. Alvey, Sr. of Catharpin, Virginia. She was a life long member of St Paul’s Episcopal Church in Haymarket, Va. Besides her parents, Sara Jane was preceded in death by one sister, Katherine L. Piercy, and is survived by two children, Jane Alvey of Catharpin,Va and Robbie and wife Pam Alvey, Jr. of Culpeper, VA, four grandchildren, Cherie Cable, Alicia Canestra, Wynn Alvey and Jennifer Warren, and eight great grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, Major General ( Ret.), Thomas G. Lightner of Vista, California and one sister, Linda L. Brown of Wilmington, North Carolina. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 from 5 to 7 PM at the Baker-Post Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 10001 Nokesville, Road, Manassas. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 4, 2014 at noon at the Sudley United Methodist Church, 5308 Sudley Road, Manassas, Va with Rev. Bass Mitchell officiating. Interment will take place in the Sudley United Methodist Church Cemetery with a reception following in the Church Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may take the form of a donation to Optimum Hospice Care, 12018 Sunrise Valley Dr. Suite 400, Reston, Va. 20191.
