Sister Laurence Bucher, O.S.B. died on May 24, 2014. Born in Richmond, VA on April 11, 1926, Sister Laurence became a member of the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia at Saint Benedict Monastery in Bristow in 1943. She served as a teacher, principal and religious education director at St. Paul, St. Benedict and Sacred Heart parishes in Richmond, St. Rose of Lima Parish in Hampton, Linton Hall School in Bristow, All Saints Parish in Manassas, St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Arlington, St. Luke Parish in McLean, and St. Mark Parish in Vienna. Having retired from parish work in 1995, Sister Laurence, set up the Heritage Room in the monastery where she tended to the historical artifacts of the community and served as the community sacristan. A very talented seamstress, she delighted in decorating and sewing curtains for the sisters living quarters.

Sister Laurence is survived by her sister, Martha Tucker, her sister-in-law, Burnell Bucher both of Richmond, several nieces and nephews and the 31 members of her Benedictine community.

All services will take place at Saint Benedict Monastery, 9535 Linton Hall Road, Bristow, Virginia. Viewing will begin at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28 with a Vigil Service being held Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. The funeral will be celebrated on Thursday, May 29 at 10:30 a.m. with burial in the sisters’ cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for the Benedictine Sisters Retirement Fund at 9535 Linton Hall Road, Bristow, VA 20136.
