Obituary for Timothy Francis Blauvelt

Timothy Francis Blauvelt
Timothy Francis Blauvelt, 77, passed unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, April 25, 2024, in Manassas, Virginia, after a short illness.

Timothy was born on June 30, 1946, in Holdrege, Nebraska, son of the late Irven and Vera Blauvelt. After graduation from Holdrege High School, he attended St. Benedict’s College in Aitchison, Kansas, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1968. He entered the U.S. Army, serving in the Army Security Agency and deploying to Viet Nam in 1970. His last duty station was at Vint Hill Farms in Virginia. After that time he put his science degree to work and began his 38 year career in Vienna, Virginia, at Hazelton Laboratories, which later became Covance Laboratories, North America. While he began as a lab technician, Tim ultimately became a certified health physicist operating as their radiation safety officer and head of the Environmental Health and Safety Department. For a time as a member of a professional organization the Institute of Hazardous Materials Managers he served on their certification examining board. More than a few times, he won awards for his innovative solutions and designs.

As a long-time member of Bethel Lutheran Church, Tim served in various capacities, including worship assistant, church council, and as part of their building and grounds committees. He was an avid gardener and especially liked working with his specimen azaleas and designing garden areas. His home with his wife of 56 years reflected his skills at design, carpentry, and do-it-yourself projects. Tim will be remembered for his unfailing generosity and kindness as well as for his sly wit, funny stories, and love of animals.

Tim was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother Terry, sisters Jean and Bette, and brother Randall. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; daughter Amanda (Jack) Kiefer of Manassas; daughter Megan (Paul) Heuer of Plano, Texas; and grandchildren, Maxfield and Nicholas Kiefer and Greta Heuer. One brother, Bradley, of Rapid City, South Dakota, survives him as well as numerous cousins and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 2, at Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church, 8712 Plantation Lane, in Manassas, officiated by Rev. Katie Pocalyco. Prior to the 11:30 a.m. memorial service, the family will greet friends from 10:30-11:30. Interment will immediately follow at the National Memorial Cemetery at Quantico at 1:30 p.m. with military honors presented at that time.
