Obituary for Virginia Sangster Heyward (Sangster)


Virginia "Ginny" Sangster Heyward, 77, of Manassas, passed away November 28, 2018 after a lengthy illness.

Born August 29, 1941 Washington, DC, she was the daughter of the late John M. Sangster and Priscilla Hart Sangster. On June 21, 1960 in Washington, DC, she married McCartney “Mickey” Heyward, who survives.

For over 30 years, Mrs. Heyward was a volunteer for the Prince William County Adult Detention Center in Manassas. She initially worked in the chaplain’s office and Administration and then took over responsibility for ordering , organizing and storing medical supplies in the Infirmary. She was also the volunteer counselor for ACTS / SAVAS support groups in the facility. She was a past member of Trinity Episcopal Church; and has been a current member of Grace United Methodist for over 25 years.

Survivors include her beloved husband of 58 years, Mickey Heyward of Manassas; two sons, John Heyward and his wife Kathleen of Lima, OH; Matthew Heyward and his wife Eileen of Alexandria; two grandchildren, Timothy Heyward of Chicago, Il and Ann Schmitt of Chapel Hill, NC; one sister, Karen Tuner and her husband William of Maryland; and one step-sister, Martha Johns and her husband Bruce also of Maryland.

A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on December 15, 2018 at Grace United Methodist Church, 9750 Wellington Road, Manassas with Rev. Rudy Tucker, Jr. and Rev. Janet Salbert officiating. Private interment will take place at a later date.

Memorial contributions may take the form of a donation to the Grace United Methodist Church building fund, Lighting the Way, 9750 Wellington Road, Manassas, VA 20110.
